Now, let me tell you IIT and NIT are simply india's best engineering colleges where IIT are on the top. IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology and there are 16 total IIT in India.eg IIT DELHI, IIT KANPUR,IIT BHU,IIT KHARAGPUR,IIT MADRAS,IIT ROORKEE etc. these are some of leading iit in india. Where last name of college stands f
or location of that IIT eg IIT delhi is in delhi.
Now , talking about NIT it stands for National Institute of Technology  and there are total 31 NIT in india.eg NIT TRICHY, NIT WARANGAL, NIT ROURKELA, NIT CALICUT,etc these are some top NIT's of india  (it is true that south india have best nit's in india).
So,now i hope it helped you. But the question is how to get into these colleges

So, its simple the National Testing Agency(NTA) conducts Joint Entrance Exams(JEE) for admission to these colleges basic criteria to write the exam is either you should pass your 12th or appearing with PCM. and secondly you should be obtain at least 75% marks in your 12th board (CBSE) or you shold be in top 20 percentile if you are from state boards.
NTA conducts jee mains first it is conducted in month of january and april almost 10-12 lakhs of students appears in the exam, you can appear in both exams but final ranks will be revealed after april exam and in both exam the exam in which you got higher marks will be used in final results.
Almost 2.2 lakhs of students are selected for jee advance which is conducted in may out of 2.2 lakhs of students only about 14000 students get into IITs.
So,to get into IIT you need to crack first jee mains and then advance with a rank below 14k in jee advance.
To get into NIT you need to crack jee mains
with a rank below 50000 in jee mains.
To get into NIT writing jee advance is not mandatory your jee mains rank will be considered.
NOTE: your board marks is not considered in your rank.
